Toilets Making the Grade Initiative

May 18, 2026

WASAReC in collaboration with BORDA Zambia and Chevening Alumni Association of Zambia under the Toilets Making the Grade Initiative, wrapped up an impactful training session for 15 WASH in Schools (WinS) Committees. The training focused on critical areas: WinS and Social Inclusion, Budgeting and Resource Mobilization, and Operations and Maintenance.

The goal? To empower these committees to take ownership of WASH management in schools with a lens of equity and inclusion.

What makes our approach unique is the involvement of learners in these trainings. This challenges the traditional narrative of seeing pupils as passive recipients of WASH interventions. Instead, they are active participants driving meaningful change.

It was inspiring to witness parents, teachers, school management, and learners exchange ideas and knowledge in such a collaborative space. Even more refreshing was seeing young learners confidently contributing their perspectives, shaping solutions for better WASH outcomes in their schools.

We are intentionally building a generation that not only values access to WASH but also takes the lead in sustaining it.

Great facilitation from Mushoka Muyatwa, Brenda Mpande and Eddy Chikuta, and kudos to Prince Kapelembe 🚰 Benard Nkole, Evelyn Funjika, @Mirriam Chishala and Teza Nampasa for all the time and effort gone into planning, making sure the training was a great success 🙌
